How do you curl ostrich feathers?
To curl an ostrich feather, hold 2-3 strands of feather frond against the edge of a butter knife and pull to the edge. The process is just like curling ribbon to put on a gift package. It works best if you only curl the outside inch or so.
Why curl ostrich feathers?
I used to see people wearing lush, marvelous feathers in their pirate hats at festivals. Over the years it has gotten nearly impossible to find them for purchase. Fortunately it is possible to do this at home.
What find of feathers can be curled?
Any ostrich feathers can be curled, though you will get better results from longer, more expensive feathers. The feathers shown here are 12” feathers seconds from Lamplight Feather, still a better quality than the bulk feathers you can get from overseas.
Why should I use better quality feathers?
High quality feathers will curl better. The strands of a quality feather will break less often, look fuller, and last longer. A cheap feather will look stringy after limited wear, and will break sooner.
