In 2020 the United States will mark 100 years of women’s suffrage.
The rest of the posts in this category will likely be about the sewing involved, but I think it is really important to note *why* I am so obsessed at the moment.
I have been looking for suffragette costume inspiration. Not to be inspired by suffragettes, which I totally am. I am looking for an achievable goal for making myself a realistic costume. Here she is:
I love this photo- liked in caption above. This suffragette is clearly stepping up for her rights. She is wearing a white outfit, both fashionable for the time, and associated with the movement. She also has hair that isn’t perfect, and that makes me happy. This impression seems like something I can do.
100 Years of the right to vote
It has been 100 years. But it has only been 100 years. The campaign obstacles put in front of the public were SO OFFENSIVE (to our modern sensibilities) when this all went down. That combined with the fact that women around the world are still fighting for basic rights makes me angry and sad. But, we are doing it. We are getting there, and the changes in the past 100 years are enormous.
Amending the US Constitution
Yup, that’s what it took. There are so many great ways to read and learn more. Wikipedia is a good place to start.
