Black Edwardian Gown Part 4

Finishing the skirt

I have trimmed the bottom edge of them hem to about an inch and a half longer than the finished edge, all around. The next step is to finish the raw edge nicely, so that I don’t end up with a thick, ugly line on the right side of the fabric. My first try at this will be with a 1″ wide folded edging. It is maybe for quilt edging? I dunno, but I have a whole roll of it, it is soft and kinda fuzzy and I think it will finish the edge of the velvet skirt nicely.

Skirt edging sewn on, the hemming begins.

Next steps for the skirt:

  • final bunches of grapes on the skirt (150 buttons and counting)
  • the edging on the skirt hand stitched on
  • Hemming the velvet gown
  • hooks and eyes for the back

Then the skirt will be done, aw yeah. I’ll try to remember to gets pics of the underskirts, and process along the way over the next few days. Hemming the velvet gown will take a while.

Note here: don’t let yourself fall for the “only the hem left= almost done” fallacy. The hem of this gown took me about 6 hours of hand sewing.

Hours later…

Front hemmed, more to go!

And two hours later…
